Gujia & Holi: A Sweet Bite of Tradition and Nostalgia

In a country where every season brings a new celebration, Holi stands out as the most vibrant festival in India. Like other festivals, Holi is also incomplete without a touch of sweetness. Drumroll, Enters Gujia!  We surveyed random youngsters asking what they love the most about Holi, and it didn’t take long for Gujia to come up. It is a treat that they don’t get to savor often during the year. Hence, the novelty adds to its extravaganza.

Love for Gujia amongst the children

Gujia is associated highly with the joy it brings to the people on this festival. Youngsters drenched in colors come back home in the evening with the widest smiles on their unrecognizable faces, literally. They are yet to realize the harsh truth that these moments would be difficult to recreate once they get older.

As an adult, every normal morning is mundane, it begins with a loud brass alarm, then continues with stress and deadlines, only to end with checking the alarm again for the next day. But amidst this cycle, festive treats like Gujia remind us to pause and indulge, offering a moment of sweetness in an otherwise scheduled life. Gujia’s crispy shell and rich filling make it a bite of joy and ultimate delight, symbolic of a happy indulgence break.

Everyone has their way

The origin of Gujia is debatable. Many trace it back to Turkish roots. This may be the opportunity for people to take their creative liberty to try their flavors and ways to enjoy the festive treat.

Gujia is enjoyed across Indians in unique ways, each region adding its touch to the tradition. In North India, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, families prepare large batches, sharing them with neighbors and guests. In Maharashtra, a similar treat called Karanji is popular not just during Holi but also for Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi. It is often enjoyed with evening tea, with elders reminiscing.

In Bihar and Jharkhand, Gujia is made for weddings, religious occasions, and family gatherings. It is stored for days and serves as a comforting treat all year round.

Though not a traditional sweet in West Bengal and Odisha, Gujia finds its way into temple offerings and special occasions, influenced by North Indian culture.

Meanwhile, in South India, Gujia is a rediscovered delight. Though not a part of traditional cuisine, many South Indians in metro cities have embraced it through cultural exchanges with North Indian communities.

Nandita Iyer, author of The Great Indian Thali: Seasonal Vegetarian Wholesomeness,  shared a unique journey of rediscovering Gujia. Growing up in a South Indian family in Mumbai, Holi was never celebrated in her home. She wasn’t allowed to join in the festivities, especially since the festival often fell close to exams. Though neighbors would send Gujias, she never enjoyed them, associating them with missing out on the celebrations. Years later, while living in another city, her perspective changed. A neighbor offered her freshly made Gujia, and with the first bite, she was hooked. She was amazed by how flavourful and crispy it was ,this experience pushed her to fall in love with the delightful sweet. In her book, she describes Gujia as the “hallmark sweet” of Holi, a festive treat that holds deep cultural significance and nostalgia for many.

For Punjabi and Sindhi families, Gujia is a favorite tea-time snack, enjoyed casually beyond just Holi. Regardless of the region, Gujia remains a symbol of festivity, nostalgia, and togetherness, making it a truly pan-Indian treat that brings people closer with every bite.
